ARAMARK Opens Sustainable Café at University of Minnesota

ARAMARK Opens Sustainable Café at University of Minnesota

On January 26, 2009, ARAMARK opened the doors to CityKid Java Café at the University of Minnesota as part of their partnership with local non-profit Urban Ventures- an organization which assists community residents in securing sustainable, safe and thriving neighborhood environments.

CityKid Java Café at the University of Minnesota is Urban Ventures' first stand-alone coffee café. Through the sale of CityKid Java coffee, Urban Ventures funds athletic programming and learning labs for at-risk youth and their families. All coffee at CityKid is purchased at or above the fair industry cost, and grown on plantations engaged in sustainable farming practices.

In addition to the sustainable and social aspects, ARAMARK employs youth from Urban Ventures and University of Minnesota students interested in non-profit organizations to work at the café. It is the goal of ARAMARK and Urban Ventures to create meaningful work opportunity for employees, providing hands-on learning and mentoring experience. CityKid Java Café employees and student managers learn business management and customer service skills in a real-life working environment.

Open Monday through Thursday and on weekends, CityKid Java Café offers CityKid Java coffee and espresso drinks, fresh prepared salads, sandwiches, soups, yogurt parfaits, fruit cups, veggies and dip, cookies and dessert bars.

With the support of University student organizations such as Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG), ARAMARK began its partnership with Urban Ventures by offering CityKid Java brewed coffees in on- and off-campus restaurants. ARAMARK also donates nutritious meals to Urban Ventures' People Exchange Program which feeds over 400 people each day.
