Building a Fleet of Green

At ARAMARK, we use a fairly large service fleet, as well as other transportation sources, to keep our business running. For us, reducing fuel use and emissions not only saves money, it can also have a substantial impact on the environment. In an interview with Darrell Shalters, Director of ARAMARK Fleet Operations, North America, we learned more about how ARAMARK is greening our roadways.

"For operational vehicles like delivery vans and trucks, choosing the right vehicle for the job is critical, and our experts have years of experience matching the right vehicle to the service need. Currently, 40% of these vehicles fall within the top 3% of the EPA's SmartWay™ program."

"All management vehicles are chosen for their limited contribution to air pollution, their greenhouse gas scores, and their EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) SmartWay scores," reports Shalters. "60% of the cars in the ARAMARK manager car fleet are in the top 3% of the SmartWay rating category. In addition, 9 of the 12 cars offered to managers have top scores for global impact. We are working to do our part and reduce our footprint." Cars on the management vehicle list always feature the smallest engine choice offered by the manufacturer in order to maximize fuel economy. In some cases, FFV (Flexible Fuel Vehicles) cars are also available.

Hybrid passenger cars are available in a variety of shapes and sizes through ARAMARK's Fleet Services division to all eligible managers. They are also available as light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, too. Examples of available hybrid vehicles include a Chevy Silverado 1500 light-duty truck and Azure gas/electric step vans.

In 2007, 35% of the vehicles that ARAMARK bought or leased were hybrid or flex fuel vehicles, and that number is expected to rise steadily in the coming years.

ARAMARK is continuously working to improve operational efficiencies and explore new technologies in other areas as well.

In Alaska's Denali National Park, a test piloting program on a hybrid Freightliner bus is underway. Due to the initial success of this piloting initiative, ARAMARK is looking to expand this endeavor to shuttle buses.

The company also purchased 8 GEM cars (Global Electric Motorcars made in the USA by Chrysler) for accounts at Muir Woods National Park and Arizona State University, among others.

By building partnerships with our suppliers, vehicle manufacturers, clients, and governmental organizations, ARAMARK will continue to strengthen its commitment to protecting and improving the environment.
