Medaille College Initiates Energy Program to Reduce Emissions

The majority of Medaille College's greenhouse gas emissions are produced by the energy used to heat, cool, and electrify the campus. Increasingly, students, faculty, and staff are deeply engaged in making Medaille a "greener" place. The College has taken the initiative to accelerate the Greening of campus by partnering with ARAMARK to implement an energy management program that incorporates sustainable strategies. Especially in today's economy, these strategies will strive to provide the greatest future environmental and financial benefits for the College. The program employs energy saving tactics that reduce usage and the college's overall carbon footprint while maintaining comfort levels. The 5-year program is expected to lower emissions by at least 500 Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (MTeCO2). MTeCO2 is the standard measure for the amount of CO2 emissions reduced or secluded from the environment. This reduction will be equal to permanently removing 100 automobiles from roadways of Buffalo.

In keeping with industry standards, the team at Medaille uses the Greenhouse Gas Protocol to quantify emissions on campus. The protocol was developed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, has become the most widely used tool for quantifying greenhouse gas emissions.

A few of the energy saving initiatives at Medaille include:

  • Lighting, heating & cooling control upgrades to enhance occupancy comfort
  • Steam heating system control enhancements
  • Equipment scheduling to provide space temperature setback during vacation & holiday periods
  • Investments in energy technologies that will enhance mechanical system
